Vṛkṣāyurveda reference

Three preparations for soil and plants, each with its lineage, ingredients and traditional use. It is a reference, not advice: no dose, yield or effect is claimed.

What the page sets down

Kuṇapajala

The liquid manure of Surapāla's Vṛkṣāyurveda (c. 1000 CE): animal remains boiled in water and left to ferment. Modern versions use fish waste, or dung and plants.

Pañcagavya

The cow's milk, curd, ghee, dung and urine, mixed together. An old combination in ritual and Āyurveda; its use on crops is a modern farmers' preparation.

Jīvāmṛta

Dung and urine fermented with jaggery, pulse flour and a handful of the farm's own soil: natural farming practice popularised by Subhash Palekar.

Medicinal plants

The plants Indian growers trade, with the part that is traded and where each grows.

What the village model is meant to change

A village that carries together what one family carries alone.

Milk sold raw

Most village milk leaves raw, at a price the family does not set. The ghee, butter and cheese made from it are made, and priced, elsewhere.

Daily work at home

A few cows at home mean cutting fodder, carrying water and cleaning the shed every day.
